If there’s one kitchen tool I genuinely wish I had started using long ago, it’s this colander, especially when paired with the Artisan Bamboo Rice Whisk for washing rice. I can’t emphasize enough how amazing this product is! This is one of those tools I know will be with me for the rest of my life. It’s something I’ll cherish and take care of, knowing it’s built to last a lifetime.

It might seem surprising, but how you wash rice—and what you use to wash it—can make a significant difference in the final result. This beautifully handcrafted bamboo colander, made in Miyagi Prefecture, has been a staple in Japanese kitchens for generations, ensuring perfect rice every time.

Versatile and Functional

Traditionally used for washing rice, this bamboo zaru is versatile enough for draining vegetables, noodles, or any other food that requires careful handling. The natural bamboo material allows water to drain quickly, keeping your ingredients fresh and ready for cooking.

  • Unique Weaving Technique  The bamboo is woven with its smooth outer surface on the inside  Protects your hands and rice grains from scratches, ensuring a gentle touch during use.
  • Hygienic Design  The bamboo’s natural water-repellent properties  Make the colander resistant to mold and stains, keeping it clean and safe for food preparation.
  • Ideal Capacity  Perfect for washing up to 5 cups (approximately 900g) of rice  Maintains the integrity of the grains for better cooking results.

To maintain the longevity of your bamboo colander, rinse immediately after use, dry upside down, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

After using the colander, rinse it immediately and set it upside down to dry. Once the bottom starts to dry, turn it over to allow the rim to dry thoroughly. If any rice grains get stuck, gently remove them with a toothpick or let them dry and remove later. Make sure to dry the colander in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, to preserve the natural bamboo material.
